PLEASE KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERS – Jessica Horton and baby Brooklyn, Bob Young, Sue Cullen and Family, and each Sunday, please pray for our CUTV broadcast at 3:00 p.m.

GUEST SPEAKER Wes Bentley – Will share with our congregation on Sunday, Dec. 12. Please read his biography in the print bulletin.

THANKSGIVING SERVICE – The regular Thursday (11/25) Service is cancelled. Instead a Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held on Wednesday, Nov 24th at 7p.m.

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING OUTREACH – It’s that time again! Please prayerfully consider being a part of the Calvary Chapel Thanksgiving Outreach. We are in need of donations of food and your time. Sign-up sheets are in the rear of the church. For more information please contact Carol Steve ALSO, this year we would like to have evangelistic volunteers accompany the drivers to share the Gospel with those who receive meals.

SAVE YOUR UNBROKEN WISHBONE – from the holidays and give them to Mr. Daniel to use for a craft project in Children’s CHurch.

THANK YOU – to everyone who helped make this year’s Operation CHristmas Child Collection a success. We collected 168 boxes.

UPDATE – LIVING NATIVITY – A Living Nativity is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the town square in Fredericktown. Please join us around the bonfire for some hot chocolate, cookies and Christmas caroling, and remember your committed participation helps us to minister and share Jesus with the local community.

CHURCH CALENDAR OF EVENTS – To avoid scheduling conflicts and to ensure space availability, all church events, as well as, outside activities must be approved and scheduled on the church calendar. Contact LeeAnn King to have your event placed on the calendar.

UPCOMING OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES – As the holidays approach, and are really ever before us, please prayerfully consider the many opportunities to reach out to our community in a real way. Thanksgiving Meals, Christmas Cookies, and Fruit Baskets, just to name a few, are all tangible ways for ”the body of Christ” to make known what God has done for us. Your contribution of prayer, time and money are much needed and will be thankfully received.”

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES– Our church continues to serve people through a number of “Helps Ministries”. These ministries are not limited to yearly outreaches and mission trips, and instead concern and affect the day to day functioning of our church and the church body. Unfortunately participation in these ministries has declined significantly in recent years. Currently volunteers are needed to prepare food for funerals and for members of the congregation who undergo surgery. See Tricia Blatnik if you would like to serve in this ministry.

Other areas of need include the Church Nursery and Sunday School Ministries. Currently we have only a small number of parents and church members who serve as nursery attendants for our congregation, and as Sunday School teachers. If you have children, and/or if you are an individual who recognizes the importance of these ministries, please see Diane Swartz to have your name added to the Nursery Attendant list, or Daniel Caron to assist with Sunday School/Children’s Church.

MILITARY LETTERS – Please see the print bulletin for current addresses for our members serving our country.

I received a news release in my inbox today touting the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend as a great time to take the family biking.

Living in southwestern Pennsylvania, the idea of biking in late November has never crossed my mind, though we have at times had some freakishly warm winter days that will draw any child to two wheels who is too impatient to wait until spring to try out a new Christmas present.

No, it wasn’t the idea of biking at Thanksgiving that intrigued me; it was the list of bike trails that drew my attention. Our very own Great Allegheny Passage was on the short list of five great trails for a holiday ride.

I’ve lived in southwestern Pennsylvania all of my life, but relocated from Pittsburgh to Fayette County 22 years ago. We didn’t have many bike trails in Pittsburgh back then, though I claim some small influence on the directional arrows on the bike trail in North Park — the arrows directing riders clockwise around the lake appeared shortly after I wrecked into three on-coming cyclists while riding counter-clockwise.

My Ohiopyle experiences were much more pleasant. In my early years in Fayette County I spent many spring, summer and fall days on the bike trail. I would ride alone or with friends after work and on weekends and I rode the trail as a volunteer for the park, taking photos of plants, flowers and wildlife. The trail wasn’t very long then, just the nine or 10 miles from Ohiopyle to Confluence and a small stretch on the other side of the Youghiogheny River. The section to Connellsville was under construction and was just rough gravel, not the compressed limestone surface it is today.

It’s been years since I’ve biked on the trail, my husband’s knees not up to the repetitive motion of biking, so it was a pleasant surprise to see my old favorite among the five highlighted trails in the news release. The Great Allegheny Passage was the longest listed. The trail now stretches 150 miles from the outskirts of Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. The really hardy can continue beyond Cumberland to Washington D.C. on the C&O Canal Trail.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is also recommending the Cape Cod Trail in Massachusetts (22 miles), the Joe Rodota Trail in California (13 miles), the Chief Ladiga Trail in Alabama (33 miles) and the Foothills Trail in Washington (28 miles). A complete list of trails with information on parking and access, as well as reviews by actual cyclists, is available at www.TrailLink.com.

<object type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” data=”http://www.sellit.com/bin/share.swf?x=3661&pid=D1DF461B5E1D0625” id=”w485012484c9446c6D1DF461B5E1D0625″ height=”380″ width=”380″><param value=”http://www.sellit.com/bin/share.swf?x=3661&pid=D1DF461B5E1D0625” name=”movie” /><param value=”transparent” name=”wmode” /><param value=”all” name=”allowNetworking” /><param value=”always” name=”allowScriptAccess” /></object>

I had the pleasure of spending a weekend at Jumonville recently, and waking early one morning, I decided to take a leisurely stroll through the woods before breakfast. I had no intention of hiking to the top of the mountain to the cross and purposely selected a wide, level path along the perimeter of the camp.

The lighting was phenomenal. A young cherry tree shone like copper at the edge of the path. The upper limbs of several older trees caught the air current and sang and they rubbed together. Individual ferns would dance in a breeze that left their neighbors unmoved. Each natural wonder drew me further along the path.

When I came to a switchback that took a decided turn uphill, I wondered whether it would be quicker to retrace my steps or to continue on the obvious loop of the path. I opted to continue onward, still not convinced my path would go to the top. The slope became steeper. I paused to catch my breath and take off my jacket. There was no question now that I was heading to the cross. Still, the first sight of it through the trees caught me by surprise.

The steel cross stands 60 feet high on a six-foot-high concrete foundation. Its arms stretch 33 feet from side to side. It filled my horizon.

Stepping into the clearing and looking out from the cross, the city of Uniontown and surrounding countryside spread out before me. I had the pleasure of viewing that same sight later that night as we drove up the road leading to the cross for a bonfire in the meadow below it. The lights of the town mingled with the stars. The cross glowed above us, making all else pale.

In all, it was a remarkable day. The site is open to the public during the day, though only those staying on the grounds are permitted there at night.

The historic Braddock’s Road passes over Dunbar’s Knob, leading north out of the clearing housing the cross. Jumonville Glen, where the French and Indian War began, is nearby. Some day when I have more than an hour before breakfast for my hike, I’d like to travel down the historic trail, as well as spend some time viewing the artifacts in the Rindfuss Museum at Jumonville. For now, I’m glad to have had the experience of enjoying a peaceful hike to the cross.

The Matesich family of Centerville Borough has an interesting way of selecting vacation destinations: they look for the cheapest airfare they can find to a place they might want to visit.

This year’s flight destination was Spokane, Washington to take advantage of an unexpired National Park pass.

“We flew into Spokane and went to Glacier National Park, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. We had bought one of the annual National Park passes last July, so we still had some time left on it. It’s like a 13-month pass if you use it right,” said Cheryl Matesich.

Matesich said she and her husband had vacationed out west 20 years ago, but didn’t get to spend nearly enough time at Yellowstone National Park, and their children had never been there. Matesich said her family also makes its reservations as the vacation is progressing, not before. The spontaneity paid off.

“We always take our laptop. We found a hotel near Yellowstone, ten made our reservations for the next night. We went to Old Faithful because you’ve got to go,” Matesich said.

On a whim, her husband checked at the Old Faithful Hotel and discovered a vacancy caused by a last-minute cancellation.

“The bellboy said we had the most requested room in the hotel. You could see Old Faithful from one window and the entire geyser basin from the other. There was only a sink in the room. You had to go down the hall to the bathroom, like a college dorm. There was no phone, no Internet, nothing. It was the best vacation ever,” Matesich said.

Old Faithful

This is a great little festival including some fantastic historians and outstanding entertainment. The organizers, the local chapter of the Lewis and Clark Society, have done a great job putting together an event that both entertains and educates. Sorry I didn;t get information out about it sooner! Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s event.

Earlier this summer my husband and I were looking for a weekend get-away that wouldn’t take more than a tank of gas. We didn’t have a lot of time to spend on the road or extra money to spend on the fuel.

My husband’s nephew who lives in Altoona suggested that we come visit. Right. Altoona. Great vacation spot.

Well, Dan couldn’t meet up with us until Saturday morning, so we had Friday to ourselves. It was a pleasant drive, mostly on two-lane roads, avoiding the majority of the heavy truck traffic and all of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We got an early start and stopped at a diner for breakfast. (We’re big fans of diners, especially if there is a house specialty like Amish meats or homemade pies. If they don’t have homemade pies and breakfast at any hour, they aren’t a real diner no matter what the décor.)

Our plan for Friday was to visit the Railroaders Memorial Museum and Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark, followed by a tour of Fort Roberdeau, then on to an Altoona Curve baseball game.

The Railroaders Museum, even filled with elementary students, was a pleasant surprise. The displays transport the viewer back to the heyday of the railroad in Altoona, from the rail yards to the backyards and parlors of the town, with first person audio accounts throughout the exhibit.

Taking the funicular to the top of Horseshoe Curve provided a breathtaking view of the valley and a railroader’s view of the curve. (Pittsburghers would call the funicular an incline—unlike the inclines in Pittsburgh though, the funicular at the curve has two cars running on a single track, with a passing zone in the middle.)

It was amazing to realize that an entire mountain valley was filled in to create the curve and create a mountable slope for the trains. The importance of the curve for moving freight is still evident in the number of trains that go through the area on any given day. One bed and breakfast located along the tracks promises a train an hour for railroad enthusiasts.

Fort Roberdeau was also a pleasant surprise. It’s a Revolutionary War-era fort that was reconstructed for the bicentennial in 1976. The fort was originally built to protect the lead mines in the area that provided the Revolutionary soldiers with much-needed ammunition. The remote fort never came under attack.

If you visit the fort, ask someone local for directions. It really isn’t hard to find with the right set of directions, but a computer-generated map probably won’t get you there.

We closed our evening with an Altoona Curve baseball game. The Curve (not to be confused with the Horseshoe Curve) is a farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team has home games through the end of August, so it’s still not too late to get tickets. The on-line ticket ordering and printing system is easy to use and even the best seats in the house are less than parking for a Major League game.

Our seats were close enough that even without the zoom lens on my camera I could see the gold chain around the first baseman’s neck. Minor league ball is a lot of fun. It’s more about fan participation than runs scored. We got to meet Bob the Baseball Dog, a young Yellow Lab being trained to retrieve bats and foul balls. Bob is very into the game.

Of course, there are also the team mascots and the between-inning fan competitions, including human bowling balls, and the Star Spangled Banner was sung by a group of pre-school students. Now that’s local baseball!

Keep in mind that Altoona is a mountain community (remember the Horseshoe Curve?) You’ll want sweatshirts or jackets for the evening if you go in early or late summer. The fact that the refreshment stands at the baseball stadium sell hot chocolate should tell you something.

Looking through the Blair County tourist information magazine, we realized there were still plenty of things to do in the area that we hadn’t even considered: hiking, camping and canoeing in nearby state parks and numerous museums and art galleries. Accommodations range from tent camping to romantic bed and breakfasts or specialty ones like the one for train spotters.

My friend Paul Pressy who was so nice to share his experiences on the road to California and back to Pennsylvania was on the road again recently, though this trip was a little less ambitious:

“This time not so far, almost like a trip to Pittsburgh, less than 200 miles in the middle of Ohio,” Paul wrote in an e-mail.

He went a camping trip to a park he’s gone to for the past four years, hidden in the countryside just north of Columbus.

“It’s called Mount Gilead State Park, ‘a quiet, small park centrally located in the state of Ohio. Picnicking, fishing and hiking can be enjoyed year-round at this beautiful location,’ (as its Website states) but that’s not why we come every year,” Paul wrote.

He was off to see the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, held July 25-27 this year, featuring every type of racing, parts swap-meet, ride in on Vintage bikes, and test drive on some of the most powerful bikes money can buy, Paul said.

You never know what you might find at the swap meet.

“It’s the Expo of bike new and old. My one favorite is the sidecar races. I seem to always get there when it’s almost over or just doing time trials,” Paul wrote.

The event isn’t actually held at the state park. It’s actually held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, which Paul says is also hidden in the countryside.

The Mid-Ohio Race Course may be in the country, but it's easy to spot!

“Hundreds of thousands come to see the sites and events. But on Friday night we always come to the ¼ mile dirt track races, it is at the Ashland, Ohio fair grounds, they race bikes that are older than some of the drivers, also they have drivers that are over 70 years old racing against the younger drivers. Most of the bikes are before they built the dirt racing bikes you would see today; they took them off the street and race on oval dirt tracks.

“As of last year, the Indy race cars come to Mid Ohio. They are something to see race and they are part of the summer of racing, check the web page for the next time they have there races next year at www.midohio.com and I have to say make reservations very early, every hotel fills up,” Pressy said.

You might want to consider Paul’s advice to stay at the state park—it’s not on the “nearby accommodations” list at the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Website, so it may not be as crowded.

In last week’s column our intrepid travellers redefined “steep” when they encountered California gas prices of $4.39 a gallon. As their travels continued back east, “steep” was redefined again, but this time by the South Dakota terrain.
As you may recall, my friends Eadi and Pick Zetty were heading cross country by motorcycle for a wedding in California. Our friend Paul Pressy was following along in his car and agreed to share some of their travel experiences as they made their way to the west coast and back to Pennsylvania.
The South Dakota portion of the trip was on the way home. Venturing into the Black Hills to see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Mountain, it appeared as if weather would be their biggest problem, as Paul Pressy wrote:
“We have traveled over 4,270 miles to a point we call our midpoint. It’s time to head home. We will stop in the Badlands in South Dakota and then head home. Our travel stories will be changing to weather conditions from today on, seems a lot of flooding and tornados are all around us,” Paul wrote of the journey out of Sturgis.
“It was cold, lows in the high 40′s and then started showing threats of rain. By the time we got to Mount Rushmore we had some very light rain; then on to Crazy Horse Mountain.”

Well, it ends up the highlight of this leg of the trip wasn’t the weather, or the massive sculptures carved from the mountains, but the road itself. Being from southwestern Pennsylvania, where homes are built on grades engineers wouldn’t recommend for parking cars, my friends are used to steep grades. These are people who regularly travel Route 40 from the Summit to Uniontown which is posted as a dangerous mountain, with a big, red sign warning truckers to stop to test their brakes.
“When leaving Crazy Horse Mountain, we came to what we thought was a steep hill to go down of 10% grade, then the next one was 15% grade, both about 2 miles long. Keep in mind that the Summit on Route 40 is 7% grade; then when you got to the bottom is was curved to the left then the right,” Paul wrote.
Well, they made it to the bottom of both hills without burning their brakes or sliding over a cliff, visited a prairie homestead, passed John Wayne’s birthplace in Iowa, and are now back home without incident after 16 days on the road.

“We highly recommend a road trip to see the country. But you must get off the interstates, the best sites are off the beaten paths. What a beautiful country we live in, I would never want to fly over and miss so much,” wrote Eadi Zetty at the end of the trip.

Our travellers have made it to California for the wedding and are now heading back again, but not before suffering sticker shock at the gas pumps.

“Well, after paying for gas between $3.51 to $3.87, we where shocked at the price just over the border into California of $4.39. Good thing our travel in and out of California was just the wedding and not part of the tour,” writes Paul Pressy. “Once in Nevada we paid $3.76. We are outside of Salt Lake City, Utah looking out my window at snow still in the mountains.”(June 2)

“Oh yes, we arrived in Boulder City, Nevada early enough to go see Hoover Dam,” Paul writes.

He sent along some photos of the dam, including construction of a a four-lane highway across the cliffs of the dam.

What’s next?

“On to the Grand Canyon to the West and South Rim,” Paul writes.

Paul also noted the Hoover Dam lake is low following a flush of the system to clear trash and debris on the the Colorado River.

“Well, now we are on the way to Cheyenne, WY and then the next two days visiting Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Mountain, Sturgis, and the Badlands,” Paul said.

Keep checking back for more photos and thoughts from the road.

Paul Pressy took these pictures from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon near Williams, AZ, the “short route” to the canyon from Interstate 40, as he explained in a recent note, 59 miles instead of 87 miles from the Flagstaff exit, then another 23 miles from the East entrance to the rim. The travellers needed to be in California before dark that day, so the short route was the obvious choice, even if gas prices weren’t skyrocketing. For those who have more time to spend, Paul notes that there are bus tours to the Grand Canyon out of both Flagstaff and Williams.

As you can see (especially if you zoom in to read the sign) they made it to California just as the sun was setting.
