Yorktown – Taking a Step Back
By Christine Haines
Vacation provides an opportunity to get away from our normal routine, and one of my favorite ways to do that is to take a step back in time. For me, the Yorktown Victory Center in Virginia is a home away from home; a chance as a reenactor to step back into the 18th century without having to lug the tentage, iron cookware and other sundries needed for a local event.
I also really enjoy interacting with tourists from all over the world, especially during Victory Weekend, the celebration of the end of the British siege of Yorktown during the Revolutionary War and Cornwallis’ surrender.
Victory Weekend in October offers a lot of special activities at the site and at the neighboring National Park site, as well as in the community, but the Victory Center is a great place to visit any day of the year (except Christmas and New Year’s Day, when it is closed!) It’s a kid-friendly site, with plenty of hands-on activities for all ages, including adults. The staff is friendly and informative, bringing the 18th century to life for visitors, whether it is in the military camp, the post-war farm site, ir in the newly renovated museum.
